Starting with the basics

This section is here to help you shape your website to reflect the unique voice and spirit of your faith community—through tone, photos, and language that feels true to who you are.

Think of your site as your church’s invitation to the wider community—a warm, welcoming hub that shows God’s love in action.

It’s your online “ad,” so focus less on what your community is to you, and more on what it offers to someone looking for connection.

Most people will view your site on a phone, so keep content clear, concise, and inviting.

Remember, your site will be seen by a range of people—holidaymakers, spiritual seekers, occasional visitors, or those looking for a new church home. Keep them in mind as you create your pages.

Establishing your website

The basic elements of your website should contain a page welcoming newcomers to the site, a page about all the things you offer, such as youth groups, home groups, special interest groups and other activities. We would suggest if you have little capacity to keep your website updated at the very least you have the following pages set up and ready for Google search engines:

  • Welcome page with a warm and inviting image
  • About Us page with some detailed information about what you offer - there is a sample here; and a
  • Contact Us page with information like your address and a feedback form linked to at least two email addresses so you can get back to people inquire about your services quickly and easily (this function is demonstrated during training).

Selecting your URL

Using the Microsites platform, you can select from the pre-configured domain https://anything.uca.org.au. The choice of anything is up to you (provided it's not already taken!).

When thinking about people outside of your Congregation, people in your area who are looking for a church will usually go to Google and type "<Suburb Name> Church". So, for example if they were in Maroubra, they might type "Maroubra Church" into the search engine.

When selecting your URL, you want to make the site as easy to find as possible for people in your area who are not yet members of your Congregation. If we include the suburb name in the domain name, it will help your site to rank more prominently for local searches.

So for example, you may call your website Maroubra Uniting Church, and your URL would ideally be maroubra.uca.org.au. The uca.org.au suffix of the website denotes it is part of the Uniting Church network.

Tip: Try a quick search now to see which churches rank well in your area!

Make sure your website is relevant and up to date... always

There’s nothing more frustrating than visiting a website with outdated info—especially if service times or locations have changed.

During training, we’ll help you set up a basic site with a homepage, about page, and contact page. If you’re keen, we can also guide you through extras like a calendar, news, or podcast page.

As your site starts showing up on Google, double-check that any placeholder text has been updated with your church’s current details.
